The Prado museum (Museo Nacional del Prado) is Madrid’s top attraction and one of the most important art museums in the world. It is home to art collected by generations of Spanish kings and emperors since the 15th century. The collection features masterpieces of Spanish, Dutch, French and Italian artists such as Velasquez, Goya, Titan, Rubens, Botticelli, Caravaggio and Rafael.
Since the collection is huge, it would be a good idea to take one of the tours according to your interests. The official website offers a few suggested tours.
The colossal neo-classical building was built in 1785 to host the royal collection of art, though it wasn’t open until 1819. The museum was recently expanded to a newly constructed cube-shaped building beside the San Jeronimo el Real church, as well as the Casón del Buen Retiro, a remodeled annex next to Retiro park.
