The Atocha train station is the largest and most central railway station in Madrid, serving metro, local (Cercaniías) and long distance (Renfe and AVE) trains. It is a huge architectural marvel featuring a large indoor botanical garden in the lobby.
The station is Madrid’s main hub for the commuter trains (Cercanías), intercity and regional trains from the south, and the AVE high speed trains from Barcelona, Zaragoza, Seville and Valencia.
The lobby has many cafes, shops and restaurants which make the waiting more pleasant.
The station was constructed in 1892 on the place of Madrid’s first train station (Estación de Mediodía) which was destroyed in a fire. It was rebuilt with an annex added in 1985.
