The Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía is one of Europe’s most prestigious modern and contemporary art museums, and the second most popular in Madrid.
The museum features 21.000 works of modern and contemporary art divided in three collections:
Together with the Museo Nacional del Prado and the Thyssen-Bornemisza collection, Reina Sofía forms the so-called “Art Triangle” of Madrid.
The museum consists of two main buildings – the “old” or Sabatini building and the “new” or Nouvel building. Two venues located at Retiro park are also part of this museum and can be visited for free: the Crystal Palace and the Velásquez Palace.
The old building was designed as a hospital in the late 18th century by Francisco Sabatini, who also participated in the remodelling of the Royal Palace.
