Vienna Town Hall (Rathaus)

Rathaus - Town Hall in Vienna

The splendid neo-gothic Town Hall or Rathaus building is one of Vienna’s most recognizable landmarks. It was built between 1872 and 1883 and today houses the office of the mayor of Vienna and the city council.

The Rathaus is located by the Ring boulevard and surrounded by other monumental buildings such as the Austrian Parliament, the Burgtheater and the University of Vienna headquarters. Very close to the Town hall are the Hofburg palace and the Natural and Art History museums.

The square in front is popular all year round but the Christmas market and ice skating rink really convert it into a fairytale image.

Guided Tours through the building are offered free of charge on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 13:00 o’clock. (except on meeting days and public holidays). The starting point is the city information center of the town hall (entrance Friedrich-Schmidt-Platz 1). An advance reservation is not necessary.
