The colossal Hofburg palace was the main imperial palace in Vienna, the winter residence of the Habsburg monarchs. It was built in the 13. century and expanded in the centuries since. It housed some of the most important rulers of Europe until the collapse of the empire in 1918.
Today, part of the palace complex is the residence of the Austrian president. Other parts of the complex include world class museums (Albertina, Natural History, Art history) and attractions (Spanish riding school, Imperial stables), public spaces such as the Volksgarten and Burggarten parks, several larger and smaller squares, a monastery, a library and more.
Don’t miss a visit to Hofburg, where you can feel what life was like at the court of Europe’s most powerful empire, and see why the Habsburgs were the people’s monarchs.
