Ringstraße (Ring Boulevard)

The Ringstraße is the most popular boulevard in Vienna and one of the most beautiful in the world. It surrounds the city core, and is flanked by the most magnificent monuments including the Hofburg palace, the city hall, Opera building and the Austrian parliament, parks and a quay.

The Ringstraße and many of it’s monuments were built 150 years ago, on the location of the old city walls. These were demolished as the city grew outwards rapidly.

The Ring boulevard is bicycle and pedestrian friendly, has a tram line circling its whole length. Trams go in both directions, while road traffic goes clockwise. It is divided in several sections:

  • Stubenring (From Franz Josefs Kai on the Danube canal to the City Park),
  • Parkring (by the City park)
  • Schubertring (between Schwarzenbergplatz and the City Park),
  • Kärntner Ring (near Kärntner street),
  • Opernring (around the Opera house),
  • Burgring (between the museums of Natural and Art History and Hofburg palace),
  • Dr.-Karl-Renner-Ring, formerly Parlamentsring (in front of the Parliament),
  • Universitätsring (by the University),
  • Schottenring (named after the Schottenstift or Scots monastery)
