Plaza Mayor (Main Square) is a baroque central square in Madrid. Built in the early 17th century, this typical Spanish plaza is entirely surrounded by residential and commercial buildings, and has nine entrances connecting it to neighboring streets. Its porticoes hide many traditional shops and cafes.

It is located just a few blocks from the other famous central square – Puerta del Sol.

The Plaza Mayor witnessed countless events, from markets (Christmas markets), bullfights, soccer games, to public executions. San Isidro (patron saint of Madrid) celebrations are also held here.

The Plaza Mayor is rectangular in shape, measuring 129 m × 94 m (423 ft × 308 ft), and is surrounded by three-story residential buildings having 237 balconies facing the Plaza.

The Casa de la Panadería (Bakery House), serving municipal and cultural functions, dominates the Plaza Mayor.
