Montjuïc castle

Montjuic Castle gardens
The mighty Montjuïc castle sits on top of the mountain with the same name, and offers some of the best 360o views of downtown Barcelona, its colossal port and airport, the surrounding hills and countryside.

Today Montjuïc castle is a cultural and vantage point with historic and art exhibitions, but it wasn’t always as bright. Throughout its turbulent history, it was a symbol of oppression for the citizens of Barcelona. Canons from the castle bombarded the city several times, and it was used as prison and for torture.

A fortress was first built on this spot in 1640. During mid 18th century, it was reconstructed and converted into a castle.
