Casa Batlló

Casa Batllo tiled facade water lilies

Casa Batlló is one of the most exquisite works of Antoni Gaudí, and one of his masterpieces on the UNESCO World Cultural heritage list. Rather than for its size, this building is impressive for its organic and colorful look, with a curvy tiled and colorful roof, bone shaped columns and ornaments and irregular windows.

The house was designed by a young Gaudí at the beginning of the 20th century as one of his first projects. The design was inspired in the legend of  St. Jordi (Saint George) slaying the dragon, with a turret stabbing through the scaled roof as a spear.

Though breathtaking from the outside, the house is even more interesting from the inside, so even though it’s a bit expensive, it is well worth to book a tour. Make sure to get the SmartGuide to get the most out of your visit!
Visits include the legendary Noble Floor (the original residence of the Batlló family), Attic (formally storage rooms and wash tubs), Roof Terrace with its mythical Chimneys (girded by the backbone of the famous dragon, slain by Saint Jordi (St. George)) and the fabulous Stairwell (once the communal stairwell). The visit concludes with the splendid Entrance Hall and Main Staircase.

This jewel, together with the also beautiful neighboring Casa Amatller is part of the Manzana de la Discordia or District of the Discord, in the Passeig de Gràcia high end street.
