The magnificent cathedral of St. Stephen stands in the very heart of Vienna since the middle ages, and has for long been the tallest structure in the city. From the South tower deck you can see the entire city.

Surrounding the cathedral is Stephansplatz, the main square of the city.

About

St. Stephen’s Cathedral is the mother church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Vienna and the seat of the Archbishop of Vienna. The current Romanesque and Gothic form of the cathedral, seen today in the Stephansplatz, was largely initiated by Duke Rudolf IV (1339–1365) and stands on the ruins of two earlier churches, the first a parish church consecrated in 1147. It was very heavily damaged in WWII and reconstruction loans have been used to restore the church to its former beauty.

The most important religious building in Vienna, St. Stephen’s Cathedral has borne witness to many important events in Habsburg and Austrian history and has, with its multi-coloured tile roof, become one of the city’s most recognizable symbols.

Facts & Figures

• The funeral of the Italian composer, Antonio Vivaldi occurred in this cathedral in 1741.
• The church is 107 meter long and its taller (South) tower is 137 meters high.
• The Pummerin bell in the North tower was cast from an Ottoman cannon captured during the Siege of Vienna in 1683.
