{"id":94,"date":"2016-02-29T13:38:26","date_gmt":"2016-02-29T13:38:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/resabi.com\/explorer\/vienna\/?p=94"},"modified":"2017-05-03T10:24:28","modified_gmt":"2017-05-03T10:24:28","slug":"volksgarten","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/resabi.com\/explorer\/vienna\/volksgarten\/","title":{"rendered":"Volksgarten"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Volksgarten or People&#8217;s garden is a public park in the <a href=\"https:\/\/resabi.com\/explorer\/vienna\/hofburg-imperial-palace\/\">Hofburg palace<\/a> complex in downtown Vienna.<\/p>\n<p>It was built in 1821 over the city fortifications destroyed by Napoleon in 1809, and open to the public in 1823.<\/p>\n<p>In the center of the park you can see the neoclassical Theseus temple, completed in 1821.<\/p>\n<p>The park is famous for its beautiful rose gardens as well as its fountains &#8211; Triton and Nymph and the Volksgarten Fountain, and monuments to empress Elisabeth and Franz Grillparzer.<\/p>\n<div  class=\"fact\"><strong>Fun fact:<\/strong> The Cortisches coffee house was built between 1820 and 1823. Austrian Romantic composers Johann Strauss I and Joseph Lanner performed here.
