It is used for state ceremonies, and some rooms are open to the public.<\/p>\n<p>The palace is surrounded by beautifully landscaped <strong>Sabatini Gardens<\/strong>, <strong>Campo del Moro<\/strong> and the magnificent <strong>Plaza del Oriente<\/strong> with <strong>statues of all Gothic kings of Spain<\/strong> and the <strong>equestrian statue of king Felipe IV<\/strong>. Part of the palace complex is the <a class=\"bubble\" href=\"https:\/\/resabi.com\/explorer\/madrid\/almudena-cathedral\/\">Almudena cathedral<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div  class=\"extended\">The palace is located on the site of a 9th-century <a title=\"Alc\u00e1zar\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alc%C3%A1zar\">alc\u00e1zar<\/a>, near the town of Magerit, constructed as an outpost by <a title=\"Muhammad I of C\u00f3rdoba\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Muhammad_I_of_C%C3%B3rdoba\">Muhammad I of C\u00f3rdoba<\/a> and inherited after 1036 by the independent <a title=\"Moors\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Moors\">Moorish<\/a> <a title=\"Taifa of Toledo\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Taifa_of_Toledo\">Taifa of Toledo<\/a>. After Madrid fell to <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Alfonso VI of Castile\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alfonso_VI_of_Castile\">Alfonso VI of Castile<\/a> in 1083, the edifice was only rarely used by the kings of Castile. In 1329, King <a title=\"Alfonso XI of Castile\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alfonso_XI_of_Castile\">Alfonso XI of Castile<\/a> convened the <i>cortes<\/i> of Madrid for the first time. <a title=\"Philip II of Spain\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Philip_II_of_Spain\">Philip II<\/a> moved his court to Madrid in 1561.<\/p>\n<p>The old <i><a title=\"Royal Alcazar of Madrid\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Royal_Alcazar_of_Madrid\">Alc\u00e1zar<\/a><\/i> was built on the location in the 16th century. After it burned 24 December 1734, King <a title=\"Philip V of Spain\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Philip_V_of_Spain\">Philip V<\/a> ordered a new palace built on the same site. Construction spanned the years 1738 to 1755. <a title=\"Charles III of Spain\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charles_III_of_Spain\">Charles III<\/a> first occupied the new palace in 1764.<\/p>\n<p>The last monarch who lived continuously in the palace was <a title=\"Alfonso XIII of Spain\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alfonso_XIII_of_Spain\">Alfonso XIII<\/a>, although <a title=\"Manuel Aza\u00f1a\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Manuel_Aza%C3%B1a\">Manuel Aza\u00f1a<\/a>, president of the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Spanish Second Republic\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spanish_Second_Republic\">Second Republic<\/a>, also inhabited it, making him the last head of state to do so. During that period the palace was known as &#8220;Palacio Nacional&#8221;.
