It is the seat of the Spanish National Astronomical Observatory and the Observatorio Geof\u00edsico Central, both administered by the National Geographic Institute.<\/p>\n<p>It represents one of the highlights of Spanish neoclassical <a href=\"https:\/\/resabi.com\/explorer\/madrid\/s\/places\/architecture\">architecture<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div  class=\"extended\">\n<p>The observatory was designed by <a title=\"Juan de Villanueva\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Juan_de_Villanueva\" target=\"_blank\">Juan de Villanueva<\/a>, architect to <a title=\"Charles IV of Spain\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charles_IV_of_Spain\" target=\"_blank\">Charles IV of Spain<\/a>, It represents one of the highlights of Spanish neoclassical architecture. Its domed lantern was conceived as a classical circular temple. It was completed in 1790 and took over some of the work previously done by the <a title=\"Real Instituto y Observatorio de la Armada\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Real_Instituto_y_Observatorio_de_la_Armada\" target=\"_blank\">naval observatory<\/a> in Cadiz.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after construction, the observatory was <strong>equipped with a 8 meters long reflecting telescope<\/strong> by William Herschel. The instrument was dismantled in the Peninsular War and only partially survived. It has been reconstructed in recent years and can be viewed along with other historic scientific equipment.
