Casa Calvet is one of Antoni Gaud\u00ed’s earliest (and most conservative) buildings, built in 1899. Nevertheless, this building also features the author’s signature elements such as the fa\u00e7ade which terminates in a curve and the attic balconies, which look like they’re from a fairy tale.<\/div>\n

The ground floor now houses a Michelin starred restaurant<\/a>. In 1900, Barcelona City Council awarded it the prize for the best building of the year.<\/p>\n

The Casa Calvet was built by Gaud\u00ed for the textile manufacturer Pere M\u00e0rtir Calvet, who set up his business premises on the ground floor and in the basement, and used the upper floors as his private residence.<\/p>\n

Bulging balconies alternate with smaller, shallower balconies. Mushrooms above the oriel at the center allude to the owner’s favorite hobby.<\/p>\n

Columns flanking the entrance are in the form of stacked bobbins\u2014 an allusion to the family business of textile manufacture. Llu\u00eds Permanyer claims that “the gallery at ground level is the fa\u00e7ade’s most outstanding feature, a daring combination of wrought iron and stone in which decorative historical elements such as a cypress, an olive tree, horns of plenty, and the Catalan coat of arms can be discerned”.<\/p>\n

Three sculpted heads at the top also allude to the owner: One is Sant Pere M\u00e0rtir Calvet i Carbonell (the owner’s father) and two are patron saints of Vilassar<\/a>, Andreu Calvet’s home town.<\/p>\n<\/div>Read more<\/a>\n
